Greeting

Everlasting principle (fui) ---                                                                   Over fifty years of pottery making. Taught the Zen philosophy of wabi-sabi by Tachibana Daikyu Roshi for thirty-five years.                                 I have been fascinated by and immersed in the profound world of wabi-sabi.                                                                   While never forgetting that philosophy, the Zen teachings state that incorporating new changes and constantly seeking novelty and evolving trends is precisely the essence of the everlasting principle (fui).                                 I hope that my pottery, which embodies this everlasting principle, will continue to exude beauty even after hundreds of years, and I continue my pottery making.                                                                                           Teragaito Kiln Sadamitsu Sugimoto

Biography

1935 Born in Tokyo

1968 Built an anagama kiln in the mountains of Shigaraki

1974 Received instruction from Daitokuji's Tachibana Daikyu Roshi, and has continued since then.

1979 Solo exhibition at Daitokuji Temple's Nyoi-an.                                            Solo exhibition at Urasenke.

1988 Exhibited at Kosetsu Museum of Art

1991 First solo exhibition at Gallery Zero,                  Rockefeller Center, New York

1992 Works acquired by Kitcho Yukimasa Museum (Osaka)

1993 First solo exhibition in Germany at                   Gallery Fred Hahn, Munich

1994 Works acquired by Yale University Art Gallery (USA)

2002 Donated an Ido chawan (tea bowl) to Kennin-ji Temple, Kyoto,                    in commemoration of its new chief priest.

               Invited to exhibit at the China-Japan-Korea International                        Ceramics Exhibition at Fo Guang Yuan Art Museum, Taipei, Taiwan.

               Invited to participate and works acquired at the International                        Ceramics Workshop at Icheon World Ceramic Center, Korea.

2003 Invited to exhibit at the Korea-Japan Ceramics Exhibition                         at Yeongam Ceramic Culture Center, Korea.

               Exhibited at "Contemporary Japanese Ceramics:                                    Reception and Dissemination" at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum.

2005 Works acquired by Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park Museum of Ceramic Art, Shiga Prefecture.

2008 Works acquired by Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture (USA).

2011 Solo exhibition at Nomura Art Museum (Kyoto)

2012 Works exhibited at the Pavilion for Japanese Art,                                      Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA).

               Solo exhibition at Frank Lloyd Gallery.

2013 Solo exhibition at Nomura Art Museum (Kyoto)                                         (Held biennially thereafter)

2014 Received the Buddhist name Genkaku Sadamitsu from                   Abbot Kobori Taigan of Kennin-ji Temple.

               Wabi-Sabi Sadamitsu Sugimoto Exhibition (Hankyu Umeda Main Store)                          Sponsored by Asahi Shimbun.

2022 Awarded the Oribe Prize by Oribe Museum.
